VW is making a return to the Nürburgring-Nordschleife for the legendary 24-hour race this upcoming June with the Golf24 model. The Nürburgring is a motorsport complex around the village of Nürburg, Germany. It features a modern Grand Prix race track built in 1984. The last time a factory-fitted Golf was fielded at the Nurburgring race was in 2007 with a front-wheel drive, 300 PS Golf coming in 8th overall.

Based on the current sixth generation Golf, the Golft24 is a racer with permanent all-wheel drive which boasts an output of 440 PS. It has undergone testing in Portugal and Italy already. The Golf24 features a revised 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged power plant from VW Group with a maximum torque of 540 Nm. This one hell of a powerplant is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters. That makes the Golf24 more potent than the already impressive Golf R.

"With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The race represents a very big technical challenge...and we want to provide an additional highlight in front of a large audience - right in time for the 35th anniversary of the GTI," said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen in the press release.

The 24-hr race at Nurburgring will take place between 23 June to and 26 June 2011. The race will feature about 220 cars, from small 100 hp cars to 700 hp Turbo Porsches or 500 hp factory race cars built by BMW, Opel, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, It has over 700 drivers (amateurs and professionals) and up to 290,000 spectators.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
