Come 2013, New York's iconic Yellow Cab will be a Nissan minivan

One little bit of news that has caught my eye recently is the fact that Nissan has won its bid to become New York’s 'Taxi of Tomorrow'. This project to find a new New York taxi was officially started in 2009 by the Taxi and Limousine Commission in order to ifnd a replacement for New York's iconic 'yellow cab'. And look what what they've come up with. A Nissan Minivan.

It's quite sad and verging on really pathetic really. Can the iconic Yellow Cab of New York be replaced by some family type mini van? This new Nissan NV200 taxi features a 2.0liter four cylinder engine, a transparent roof panel for more light into the interior, a charging station for passengers and something which I really like; a 'low annoyance horn with exterior lights to indicate that the taxi is honking'. Imaging on a traffic jammed evening in New York city and these new for 2013 onwards Nissan taxis start honking their horns in unison. You will get lights as well as sound (that is supposedly less irritating). More colors in New York at night.

So anyway, for ten or so years from 2013 onwards, the iconic Yellow Cab of New York will be vans. It is as simple as that. Yes, the new taxis will certainly be more fuel efficient than the usual Fords and Chevrolets that are used. They would be more space efficient and practical too. But would the iconic image still stay? It would be like replacing the London Black Cabs with Proton Sagas. Or replacing the Merlion statue with a Merlion that looks like Garfield's head instead of a proper lion's head and then stating that the reason it is done so because the statue is old and it needed a freshing up.

The times are a changin'. So when we visit New York come 2013, be prepared to ride in MPVs instead of something that looks like a traditional New York Cab. Nothing is sacred these days. Couldn't someone come up with a traditional looking taxi with modern hybrid engines and other modern tech deep within its skin but look all traditional?

llmw: yes, sad to hear of that too. But 1950/60s designed fiats would NEED phasing out. Have you ever ridden in any small italian saloon from the 1960s? Its a mostly horrid experience. The only good affordable sedan from the 1960s worth having a go in is the Volvo 122. Things only started getting bearable in the late 1960s when say Fiat came out with the fiat 124. Those were decent small cars to potter around in. BUT not in 2011 mind you.

So i suppose in Mumbai's case, a change should be made. Anyway, since they're still producing their version of the morris oxford from the 60s, maybe that should replace the cabs as indian govt officials start phasing them out.
