The Heavy Vehicle Nightmare

The LTA recently revealed the number of accidents involving heavy vehicles and it was quite appalling. The figures have risen by 14% to 240 from 210 in 2009 and that does not include accidents caused by them. Yes we all know they have tight schedules and are living a pretty tough life but I’m sure that more can be done to ensure that the drivers take care of their own safety as well as the other road users.

One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard is that they are road bullies who will into a lane that barely had enough room to accommodate the mass of steel on wheels. And another problem that plagues road users is that these large heavy vehicles’ indicator lights are not always functioning or its covered in mud or dirt which makes them virtually invisible while you are driving. Some just don’t work at all and maybe the drivers aren’t aware or there isn’t enough checks done on the vehicle to discover the problem.

You know how the EMAS signs always say “Heavy Vehicles Please Keep Left?” Well I don’t see that happening. They are all over the place, some even veering off to Lane 1. There’s not much more to say is there? They speed and are a hazard to other drivers. So get back to Lane 3 or 4!

If you’ve faced any other problems with heavy vehicles or experienced ‘near accident’ situations please leave a comment and let other readers know your plight!
