How about an extension of weekend free parking?

The Presidential Election is heating up with another presidential hopeful, Dr Tan Cheng Bock, who has just submitted his Certificate of Eligibility forms at the Elections Department. In order to make an informed choice, I read up about Dr Tan Cheng Bock’s contributions as an ex Member of Parliament. According to his blog, Dr Tan fought for free parking on Sundays and Public Holidays at HDB carparks in Parliament to foster and promote social interaction and quality family time. I would like to suggest an extension of this policy and share my 2 cents’ worth here.

I believe there are quite a number of young working parents who place their pre-school toddlers under the care of their grandparents. There working parents would drop off their children (and maid) at their parents’ house early in the morning before heading to work. In the evening, they would pick up their children from their parents’ home after work.

Perhaps HDB could consider allowing free parking at HDB carparks on a weekday, between 6pm to 8pm. This is an extension to Dr Tan’s idea of promoting quality family time. These young parents would then be encouraged to have dinner with their own parents on a weekday, rather than just “pick-and-go”. It also encourages young adults who are living on their own to visit their parents more often. With a greying population, minor changes to policies as such could help to ensure that our elderly citizens are better looked after.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
