Continental “talents” in the heartland

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and I happen to be at an old estate in Bedok North. The surrounding blocks of HDB flats are mainly 3-Room type. As I drive through the open air carpark, I can’t help but be amazed by the “treasures” that I found there. I decided to take a walk around the carpark with my trusty camera.

Here we go:

1) BMW 3 Series

2) BMW 5 Series

3) Audi A4

According to a recent report, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and Audi made it to the top 5 selling brands in Singapore during the first half of 2011. That probably explains why continental makes are infiltrating the heartlands like foreigners with an unfamiliar Chinese accent. Some of the vehicles above could even cost more than what the owners paid for their 3-room HDB flat. If the COE continues its way to Mount Everest, this phenomenon will continue to exist. The Japanese, which used to dominate the sales chart, are being displaced to much lower rankings. I won’t be surprised if brands such as Mazda and Suzuki are being squeezed out of the local market one day.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.

You people are missing the point. The author is referring these continental cars to the old HDB estate. Normally, you would see an army of luxury marques in a private estate, but not usually at HDBs. Some of the cars even cost more than a HDB flat. These cars are indeed "treasures" in a HDB context.
