Mercedes Benz tuner Carlsson has decided to preview their Mercedes Benz GL Grand Edition based Carlsson CGL45 before the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is basically one of those wide bodied body-kitted conversions that every other tuner seems to be interested in putting out. It has all the usual addendas – wider wheel arches, sports exhaust system, front bumper/splitter with the compulsory LED driving lights, a rear bumper/diffuser and that grille with Carl’s son’s logo (A bit of general knowledge to you readers out there - Scandinavians all have this sort of surnames – Henriksson, Svenson, Stevenson, Phuachukangson). And it is about this grille logo which I think makes the Carlsson CGL45 look like its a General Motors Korean made car instead of a luxury SUV barge.
Yes it does have lots of power if you buy the GL500 version with its 430bhp and 600Nm V8 engine and sportier lowered by 30mm suspension system. Those rims are cool looking too but that grille.........makes the whole car look ultra garish and cheap. Sometimes there is a limit to tuning a car and I do think that the car looks like a Vauxhall, Opel or a Chevy instead of a range topping Mercedes Benz. I’d suggest future GL owners who feel the need to bling-out their vehicles to keep the three pointed star and never ever put that funny jumping horse on the grille of the car. Ever.
You may plaster ‘Carlsson’ badges and embroidery on the interior though. No one can see it and cringe.
