Promotion: Caltex discount vouchers

I was at Caltex Macpherson 465 on 13 Aug to fill up my car. The petrol station is scheduled for renovation works from 15 August 11 to 7 October 2011. On that day, the station’s convenient store was almost cleared up and a stack of leaflets on the payment counter caught my attention. I took one of those and realized that they were discount vouchers.

The discount vouchers are only valid for use at 3 particular locations, namely Caltex Aljunied, Macpherson 68 and Paya Lebar. It gives the customer $3 off Caltex petrol with a minimum $50 gross petrol purchase. Looking at the terms and conditions at the back of the voucher, the Caltex StarCard cannot be used in conjunction with the voucher to make payment. Let’s examine if the voucher is a good deal. I assume that all sensible motorists would pump just $50 to maximize the percentage discount.

$50 -$3 =$47
5% site discount on $47 = $2.35
Total discount = $3+$2.35 = $5.35 (or 10.7% over $50)
Caltex StarCard discount = 13.6% (Source: petrolwatch.com.sg)

Thus, it is more attractive to make use of the StarCard if you have one. However, whether the voucher could be used in conjunction with credit card discount is not stated clearly. If the answer is yes, when used together with HSBC Visa Platinum card, consumer gets a total discount of 16.3%. This does not take into consideration the 4% rebate from HSBC Visa Platinum card, which needs to satisfy another set of criteria to qualify. 16.3% discount is quite attractive by itself already. I will try to use the voucher with my HSBC card next week and update.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
