A friendly bus captain

It was a Thursday evening. I took bus 15 from my office after a day of work. As the bus came to a halt at the following bus stop, I heard someone speaking but I could not figure out who or what the person was saying. As I was rather tired, I didn’t bother to find out what was happening and continued to stare aimlessly at window. At the subsequent bus stop, I heard the same voice again. This time, I managed to catch it clearly. It was the bus captain bidding the alighting passengers farewell. He said, “Goodbye, have a nice day”.

The bus captain is a young Chinese man who seemed to be in his 20s. He continued to bid farewell to the alighting passengers at every bus stop. As expected, his friendly gesture was not reciprocated. I read that greetings by bus captain are quite common in some countries. However, this culture is certainly not commonly practiced here. I believe he could have gotten a few strange stares from the passengers. As I alight the bus, I smiled at the rear mirror to acknowledge his greetings.

The bus plate number was SBS8496B. I alighted at Eunos Link (B02) at about 6.40pm. I hope that the young man’s courteous gesture will get recognized by SBS Transit one day.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
