A crash on the Nurburgring track happened on the 02 October involving 8 cars, including a rented Corvette and a newly commissioned BMW M3 “Ring Taxi.” The accident caused more than US$130,000 in property damage and one of the drivers involved were sent to hospital for serious injuries.
According to local police, the accident happened at the Bergwerk section of the track. As three cars were slowing for a construction zone (why there were road works done on a track day is still not clear), a fourth driver applied the brakes on his car but couldn't prevent a collision with one of the 3 vehicles ahead. He subsequently slid onto the grass and then back onto the track some fifty meters away. It was there where he crashed into the other two vehicles.
Three other drivers saw the crash and slowed down. The M3 Ring Taxi crashed into one of the slowing cars and subsequently hit another car before stopping at the left side of the track. Police said that the cars were from several European countries. A sticker on the Corvette suggests that it belonged to a Swedish luxury car rental company.
Two injured drivers were treated at the accident site while one was taken to hospital for serious injuries. All cars had substantial damage and only one was able to be driven.
The accident occurred near the same place where Niki Lauda crashed his car during the 1976 German Grand Prix.
