The next Mitsubishi Evo is confirmed a hybrid

Rumours about the next generation Mitsubishi Evolution to be a hybrid has been going around for quite some time and there were also rumours about Mitsubishi scrapping the model totally and focusing on electric vehicles. But now Mitsubishi have made a U-turn and confirmed that the next generation Evolution will feature a hybrid powertrain.

Mitsubishi president, Osamu Masuko, recently announced that the company is starting on the new hybrid Evolution project next year and it will be ready within the next three years. He also added that Mitsubishi has set the goal of developing a sports car featuring electric power.

What’s even more surprising that, supposedly, the hybrid engine’ motor will be fed with diesel. This will allow Mitsubishi to avoid stringent emissions regulations. Hardcore Evo fans will call this absurd but the diesel-electric powertrain could offer staggering amount of torque provided by the electric motor plus the low end pull of the diesel engine. On top of this, the next gen Evo will feature an upgraded version of the S-AWC four wheel drive system with improved torque vectoring capabilities.

It is evident that most Japanese automakers are really playing the “green card” and Mitsubishi is one of them. By introducing their flagship performance model with a hybrid engine, I hope this will not upset their die hard fans and also racing teams who are using their vehicles for racing.

Some say that his blood is actually RON98 petrol and some say that his right foot weighs over 20kg. But all that we know about Faez is that he loves to drive and is a JDM enthusiast.

diesel engines have wonderful low mid end characteristics compared to petrol, but it always runs out of breath in the high end. Might be interesting to see the final figures of the finished product :P
