WRX and STi will get their own dedicated platform

The fourth generation Impreza was recently introduced and Subaruís redesign of the car deviates from the modelís traditions. It sacrificed power in the name of fuel efficiency. That may give the Impreza a wider appeal to consumers but it does not look or sound befitting of a performance car. And because of this Subaru has decided that it will shift direction with its WRX and STi variants.

Subaru has announced that they will redesign the WRX and STi variants and will give them a new dedicated platform by 2013. As for the current WRX and STi models, they will still use the current Impreza platform. In addition, Subaru will also dump the Impreza name on the redesigned versions. Subaru sees this as to differentiate its performance models with its normal, ordinary Impreza models.

Not much was revealed on the next-gen WRX but Subaru promised consumers that the STi version will get at least 300bhp. I believe that we would only get to see it in 3 Ė 4 years time as it is too soon for a new model to be released.

This looks like a great move for Subaru and I feel that automakers should display a major difference between their ordinary models and performance ones so that it will show what a, for example, WRX is really and what is not. But somehow, people will still find many ways to make a certain model look like another one.

Normally people canít tell the difference between a WRX and an Impreza, except for some exterior differences. Generally people might think that it is the same. Only when a shift like this happens then there will be a stark difference.
