The DeLorean DMC-12, appeared in the Back to the Future movie trilogy, is one of Hollywood’s greatest icons. With its trademark gullwing doors and stainless steel body, it has become a cult status among car enthusiasts and also movie lovers. Now, the current DeLorean Motor Company is working on an all-electric version of the DMC-12, slated for production by 2013.

A little history about the DMC name since many knew that the DeLorean Motor Company went bust years ago and why is there still a “new” DMC-12.

The current DeLorean Motor Company, based in Texas, has no affiliation with the original DMC; which was started by former General Motors executive John DeLorean. The new company’s main business is to restore and build new cars from existing original factory parts. When the new company took over the rights to the DeLorean name, they acquired a huge stockpile of parts.

You might be wondering why there are a large amount of parts left. The original DeLorean Motor Company intended to sell around 30,000 units of the DMC-12 but only over 9,000 units were ever made. Main reasons for this were a decline in demand for the car and high cost overruns (unexpected cost incurred in excess of a budgeted amount due to an under-estimation of the actual cost during budgeting). The company folded in 1982.

Now back to the main story about the all-electric DMC-12.

The new car is a collaboration between the new DMC and Epic EV. The developmental model is called DMCEV. The plan was unveiled during the International DeLorean Owners event recently. Epic EV is known for its Torq Roadster which produces 200 bhp from an electric engine, mated with a single speed transmission (with reverse gear).

If the all-electric DMC-12 is going to adopt the powertrain of the Torq Roadster, then it will be more powerful than the normal engine model. It may look or sound a little low on “jiggawatts” but both companies have 2 years to work it out.
