It was about only two months ago when Volkswagen introduces the VW Up city car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. At that same event, Volkswagen also showcased several Up concepts and one of them was the Up GT. Initially thought to be just a showcasing formality, but now details of the Up GT have leaked onto the internet and it seems that we might see it released sooner than later.
In terms of horsepower, the Up GT might deliver up to 100bhp (something in the range of the Fiat Panda 100HP version) and most probably VW will force-induced the base model’s 1.0 litre three cylinder engine, with either a turbo or supercharger. It might also be featured with Volkswagen seven-speed DSG transmission.
To differentiate it with the base Up model, Volkswagen has beef up its exterior styling. The car will get its own set of bodykit. Volkswagen has included a larger honeycomb centre grille on the front bumper. Situated next to the grille are two large air vents and running LED lights in the middle of the vents.
Side mirrors finished in gloss black, larger sills and at least, a 17 or 18 inch wheels enhances the car’s sporty aspect. At the rear, a roof spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tip and a rear diffuser completes the Up GT’s sporty attitude.
In the cabin, the Up GT receives black roof lining, black seats with blue and grey chequered pattern. The dashboard is finished in gloss black with lighted-up blue rings around the air-conditioning vents.
Rumour has it that the Volkswagen Up GT is still in conceptual form but judging from the photos, it is at least 80% production ready. A small, lightweight car that punches 100bhp is pretty impressive and it will make the Up GT a popular pocket rocket.
