Hyundai Elantra Coupe spy shots

The new Hyundai Elantra was only released worldwide less than one year ago. It is a good-looking mid-sized four-door sedan if you were to compare it with other Asian models from the same category. Sometime early this year, there have been reports that Hyundai will be releasing a coupe version of the current-generation Elantra. Hyundai dismissed those reports and denied any of it.

But spy shots of an Elantra Coupe test car have surfaced in the World Wide Web. Somehow, it is rather confirmed that Hyundai is releasing a coupe version of the Elantra and judging from the pictures, we might see it real soon.

The picture shows a heavily camouflaged car, most of the exterior is covered. It is clear that the carís bodywork resembles the Elantraís flowing body lines. The five-spoke wheels are of a new design and at the back we can see a small spoiler bulging out from the rear bonnet. Both front and rear lights are chunkier than the sedanís version. Most of these features might change when Hyundai releases the car.

Powertrain wise, again rumoured reports have pointed out that the Coupe might get the same engine from the Hyundai Veloster. The all new Gamma 1.6 litre four cylinder engine delivers an output of 138bhp and mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Specific output from the 1.6 litre engine is pretty impressive, 86.3bhp per litre, better than any of its competitors.

The Veloster also gets a turbocharged engine, generating at 208bhp, and if the Elantra Coupe receives this upgrade, then it will put the model into the budget performance segment.

Hyundai will most definitely showcase this model at an upcoming auto exhibition in the States in the first half of next year, most probably at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2012. If that happens we will get to see it in the showrooms by the end of 2012.

It seems that Hyundai is going towards the direction of releasing great looking cars that people want to buy. And what are the Japanese automakers doing? Showcasing conceptual electric vehicles that will only interest tree huggers.

Some say that his blood is actually RON98 petrol and some say that his right foot weighs over 20kg. But all that we know about Faez is that he loves to drive and is a JDM enthusiast.

Good direction. But I doubt KMC is bringing in the GDI and the turbo version. Just probably another boring D-CVVT 130hp. But the interesting new feature is the 6-speed dual-clutch tranny. Hope that speeds this car up. :)
