Let us continue in this second instalment of iconic vehicles from the movies and TV shows.
Herbie VW Beetle from The Love Bug
Herbie is an anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle that was featured in the Love Bug movie franchise. The character has a mind of its own and basically it can do anything it wants, for example driving on its own. The romantic comedy is about a struggling race car driver who, after a racing crash, went out to look for a replacement race car.
He eventually bought a white VW Beetle after visiting a showroom and at one point of the movie; he was convinced that the car had a mind of its own. The rest of the movie tells the adventures of the driver and his companions’ involvement in a race competition.
The VW Beetle became one of the most famous four-wheeled stars during the 1960s and 1970s. The red, white and blue stripes and together with the number 53 decal became a popular addition to Beetles all around the world. It is said that the engine used in one of the Beetles used as Herbie in the movie was a Porsche 356 engine and equipped with Koni suspension.
KITT (Pontiac Trans Am) from Knight Rider
The 1982 Pontiac Trans Am used in the TV series Knight Rider was heavily modified with several unique fictional features. One of the most well known features was the turbo boost. Its undercarriage was fixed with rocket motors that could propel the car beyond 200mph. Other than this, the car also had molecular bonded shell (which protects the car from firearms and explosive devices) and the infamous red LED scanner which was able to function as an x-ray or an infra-red application.
The storyline of the original TV show revolves around a former police detective who is engaged by Knight Industries to be their field agent for a public justice organisation program. The main lead of the show is starred by David Hasselhoff.
The producers spent almost US$100,000 modifying the Pontiac Trans Am. In 2008 a new series was released and the Trans Am was replaced with a modern Ford Shelby GT 500KR.
Mad Max Interceptor Ford Falcon XB GT from Mad Max
The story of this movie is set in a dystopian future where the town is terrorised by motorcycle gangs. The leading role, starred by Mel Gibson, plays a police officer who is tasked to stop and apprehend these gangs. When the wife and son of Mad Max were killed by one of the gangs, he hunts down the gangsters and finishes them off.
The car used in this movie is also known as the Pursuit Special. It is essentially a limited edition 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT351 Hardtop, equipped with a 351ci (5.6 litres) V8 engine. Two sedan version of the car was used as the police patrol vehicles.
