Although Audi is busy with the introduction of its 2012 A4 Allroad model at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, they have something up their sleeve. And that is the 2013 Audi A6 Allroad which they have announced just recently in Germany. Looks like the Audi A4 Allroad will get a big brother.
Audi has adopted its Allroad recipe for the A6 by taking the A6 Avant and making it ready for the urban jungle. If you were to really compare the A6 Avant with the A6 Allroad, the Avant is a sleeker-looking vehicle and the Allroad is more suited for some rough and tough driving.
Firstly, the Allroad’s dimensions are bigger. With a length of 4.94 metres, a width of 1.9 metres and a height of 1.47 metres, making it irrelevantly larger than the Avant. Its height is 6cm higher than the Avant; in order to deal with the rough off-road driving (if someone wants to do that). Although the car is bigger in size, its weight is almost 70kg lighter than the previous model.
The car receives Audi’s newly designed clipped top single frame grille and also newly designed bumpers. Plastic bits surround the lower part of the car which starts from the front bumper and extends around the front wheel arcs. The rear bumper and rear wheel arcs get the same treatment too. The plastic part of the wheel arcs gives the car a more aggressive stance.
On top of that, the front headlights are of a new cluster which features on newer Audi models. At the rear, the car gets a subtle roof spoiler and dual exhaust tips that sits on the rear diffusers. The Allroad also gets a double bar mounted roof rails and standard 18 inch wheels.
A key feature of the car is its adaptive air suspension. The car’s height can be lowered by 15mm for those high speed runs and it can be raised by 35mm with just a touch of a button for some off-road adventure. And if needed, the driver can further increase the car’s height by 15mm by engaging lift mode.
There will be four engine options; one TFSI petrol and three TDI diesels. All will be V6 3.0 litres, with direct fuel injection technologies and also forced induced. The 3.0 litre TFSI engine delivers 310bhp and 440Nm of torque. Does the century sprint at 5.9 seconds. The car will get either an eight speed automatic transmission or a seven speed dual clutch transmission.
Like most all-wheel drive Audis, the Allroad’s Quattro drive system is paired with torque vectoring. During spirited driving; this system brakes the wheels on the inside of the curve, which are under a reduced load, before they can slip. This further enhances traction and handling. An optional sport differential distributes the power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels as well.
The Audi A6 Allroad is expected to debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and will start to go on sale in the later half of 2012 as a 2013 model.
