The Volkswagen Up! was introduced to the world at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year and Volkswagen came up with several concepts for it before the official introduction. At this yearís Geneva Motor Show, the German automaker has introduced four new concepts for the Up! (as though one or two concepts is not enough).
Anyway, with the addition of four new concepts, the compact car has more personalities than Harvey Dent (also known as Two-Face, a villain from the Batman series). Letís start with the Swiss Up! To honour the host country of the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has released a Swiss Up! concept.
With all the introductions of these Up! concepts, Volkswagen is probably trying to show the world that the car is versatile like a Swiss army knife. The colour scheme of the car (both interior and exterior) reflects the colours of the Swiss flag, mainly red and with a little touch of white. At the back of both front seats is a leather band for storing the signature pocket knife. In my opinion, not a good idea if you have young children seated at the back.
Next up, is the Winter Up! which is based on the Cross Up! shown last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With a roof rack fixed on top and snowboards attached to the rack, this cool looking white and blue concept is ready for the ski slopes. The carís raised height, slightly flared arches and underbody protection is meant to create a rugged look.
Volkswagen claims that the carís low weight, front wheel drive and ESP with electronic differential lock will give the car surprising agility in slippery conditions. The Winter Up! is suitable for those who lives in areas where the snowy climate is a common occurrence.
Next, we look at the X Up! Just like the Swiss Up!, this concept is based on the Cross Up! but it is equipped for night time expeditions. The roof box fixed on top of the car comes with built-in search lights. The car is also given a rugged look, similar to the Winter Up! and the Burnt Orange exterior colour scheme is integrated into the interior as well.
Finally, the last Up! concept is known as the Cargo Up! This particular concept was designed to show how the car can be used for urban deliveries, suitable for small and/or medium sized businesses. The rear seats has been removed to create a flat loading space of 1400 litres or 426kg of load.
Underbody protection and raised vehicle height allows the car to go through pot-holed urban streets. The upper half of the retaining wall is made from Plexiglas and it separates the cargo area from the driver compartment. The rear and rear side windows are given the same colour as the carís exterior body, keeping the cargo safe from prying eyes.
Volkswagen has started production of the three door Up! back in December and it will hit most showrooms in Europe by March this year and the five door variant will follow suit in the second half of this year.
With all of these Up! concepts, I wonder if Volkswagen will release a 7 Up! version of the car (this joke is so corny it made me want to throw Up!).
