Michelin announced that their fastest series-production tire, the Pilot Super Sport, will be fitted to the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Maranello’s most powerful production car ever. Ferrari has chosen Michelin as one of the official tire provides for the car, after their successful collaboration on the FF and the 599 GTO.

Thanks to the technologies developed at the Michelin’s Research and Development center, Michelin has designed tyres capable of enhancing the 6262cc V12 740 hp engine. A high-tenacity fiber Twaron provides the superior high-speed stability.

A key feature of Twaron is that it is both very strong and light at the same time. Twaron is five times more resistant than steel at equivalent weight.

The Variable Contact Patch ensures that the amount of rubber in contact with the road remains the same even though the patch’s shape changes when cornering. Michelin also uses different rubber compounds on the left and right sides of the tread.

On the outside, a unique elastomer specifically developed for racing tyres ensures exceptional endurance. On the inside, a latest-generation, high-grip elastomer enables the tyre to break through the water’s surface and adhere to even the slightest irregularity on a wet road.

F12 Berlinetta’s tyre sizes are 255/35ZR20 at front and 315/35ZR20 at the rear. That’s pretty big footwear indeed.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
