When Chevrolet introduced the new Sonic (known as the Aveo in Singapore) with the 1.4-Liter turbocharged petrol engine, it was available exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Now, GM announced that it will be available with the option of a 6-speed automatic. This is good business strategy as not everyone prefers to switch gears by themselves.
“Providing the option of a turbocharged engine to our non-stick driving Chevy customers allows us to offer everyone the thrill and power of a fuel-efficient Ecotec 1.4L powerplant,” said Jim Danahy, vehicle chief engineer for North American small cars. The Sonic’s 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged engine is SAE certified at 138 horsepower.
The 6-speed manual 1.4L turbocharged Sonic sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. The added convenience of an automatic transmission slows down the subcompact car slightly, allowing it to reach 60 mph in 8.0 seconds.
However, such performance is considered very decent is my opinion and will have no problem making the Jazz or Polo Sport appear in the rear mirror. The fuel consumption of the automatic model is rated at 6.4L/100km for highway and 8.7L/100km for city. The automatic option is available on both the sedan and hatchback versions.
The right-hand-drive version of the Aveo is already available in the UK. The current high COE may mean we will not see it in our shore any time soon.
