Rumours about Nissan releasing a smaller sports model has been around for quite some time. Currently, the company has two sports models which are the 370Z and the GT-R (three, if you were to count the 2-door Skyline). But that might change soon as Nissan’s design boss; Shiro Nakamura has revealed, that the company is looking at downsizing its sports models.

Besides the size of the car, the engine capacity will see a reduction as well. Nissan is looking at small, lightweight models which could use smaller displacement engines. The company is contemplating on a 2.0-Litre engine which could see the return or revival of the 200SX/Silvia badge.

Nakamura mentioned that he prefers small-sized sports car and feels that it is time to look at smaller engines. On top of that, he also mentioned that one of the company’s priorities is to reduce the weight of Nissan’s next generation sports car.

As for a model name, Nakamura joked about calling it 200Z. The numeric name for 'Z' category cars are determined by engine capacity, a tradition ever since the first model, the 240Z. Alternatively they could follow Mercedes, where a C-Class 250 actually has a 1.8-Litre engine. Anything is possible.

With the news, it is clear that Nissan has noticed the template of success for the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ - Light, compact and a modest 2.0-Litre powertrain. Obviously, this is what JDM car fans really want and with a possible return of the 200SX/Silvia model, sports car fans (especially drifters) will be delighted.
