The Range Rover Evoque won the 2012 World Car Design of the Year award recently at the New York Auto Show. Now, the funky SUV has won the ladies’ heart and was named the Women’s World Car of the Year 2012.

Female motor writers from across 12 countries made up the jury for the Women's World Car of the Year awards. The voting comprised of four different categories, namely Family Car, Luxury Car, Sports Car, Economy Car and an overall, Supreme Winner award. The Range Rover Evoque was voted as ‘Luxury Car of the Year ‘and ‘overall supreme car’.

The BMW 3-Series won the ‘Family Car of the Year award’, with the Porsche 911 being named as the ‘Sports Car of the Year’ and the Honda Civic was voted ‘Economy Car of the Year’. The two runners up in the overall points category were the BMW 3 series in second place and the Audi Q3 in third place.

I was surprised that the Evoque clinched the award. Although it looked nothing like the range rovers of the past, the design and shape of the car is more skewed towards masculinity. Perhaps, this is an indication of the changing taste of women as I noticed that certain designs of women’s watches are getting bulkier too.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
