Sports utility vehicles are gaining much popularity in the past five years, especially crossovers. While other automakers are churning out SUV models one after another, Volkswagen currently has only two models which are the Tiguan and Touareg.

Its subsidiary, Audi, currently has three SUV models with three more planned in the near future and this made Volkswagen’s SUV line up look a little scant.
But this will change in the near future as Volkswagen is planning to introduce two new compact SUVs based on two concepts showcased at the recent Tokyo Motor Show which is the Buggy Up Concept and the Cross Up Concept.

The compact SUV market segment is expected to be set for a massive expansion in the coming years. Even as I write this, two other German auto manufacturers have already released a compact SUV; BMW’s X1 and Audi’s Q3.

Volkswagen is definitely looking to get on the ground floor with the development of the two new compact SUV which was reported by a German news publication.

One of the SUVs will be based on the Buggy Up Concept. It is said that this one is very much certain to go into production and consumers should expect much of the Buggy Up looks and styling to be used on this model.

The other model is said to be based much on the Cross Up but there are conflicting reports which stated that the car will instead be based on the Polo. Maybe what those reports meant was the car will use the Polo’s underpinnings but with the Cross Up’s styling.

Anyway, whatever the decision that the German auto company decides on, it is believed that we could get to see the two models in a couple of year’s time. Volkswagen instead decline to confirm with regards to these reports but they did confirm that the company is exploring further expansion in the SUV market segment.

A spokesperson for the company also mentioned that SUVs are very interesting and the company's modular production system allows for further spin-offs.
