BMW has already introduced the new 3-series in Singapore. Soon, there might be a new variant making its way here, the 316i. Like the 116i, the new entry level 3 series is powered by a 1.6-litre engine that features turbocharging and direct injection technologies.
BMW’s highly acclaimed TwinPower Turbo is said to deliver more power and torque while cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions. The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces a peak power of 136hp and will 100km/h in a brisk 8.9 seconds. The engine will be available globally with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard while owners can specify the 8-speed automatic gearbox as an option.
The Mercedes C180 is the main rival to the new 316i. The aging 5-speed automatic C180 is powered by a 1.6-litre forced-induction engine as well. Although it produces a higher 156hp, the car completes the century sprint in a much slower 9.9 seconds, a full second behind the 316i.
The 316i’s main trump card over the C180 is its 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW will introduce the 316i variant towards the end of 2012. Let’s hope that it arrives in time for delivery before 2013 Lunar New Year.
