One of the biggest surprises yet. Proton has revealed that they will be sending a Hybrid Concept to the Geneva Motor Show. And the news gets even better, this particular concept was penned in collaboration with Giugiaro, the Italian designer who has nothing short of an illustrious portfolio with the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT in 1972 to the 159 we know today, even the first Golf and Scirocco was penned by the great man. Of course it wasn't just done by him alone, but by his company. And now, there's the Hybrid Concept from Proton. Will that be a spot of rust on his gleaming trophy of designer excellence?
Giugiaro says that the concept car is “set to revolutionise traditional segmentation in the car market” and was designed “with the aim of optimising the available onboard space and car access ergonomics”. Well I do hope so because this one actually looks good, obviously. With the raised floorpan that accommodates the engine at the front and the batteries at the rear, its quite amazing that this small 4 seater, 5 door hatch is shorter than a Proton Savvy which is already minuscule to begin with.
With its good looks and bits from Lotus, (though we all know that its more of a marketing gimmick than reality), I hope that this Hybrid Concept will eventually make the production line and not end up having the reputation that previous Protons have, like the Gen 2, with broken door handles and fires in its Blackbook. And the person who will be unveiling the car is none other than Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Lets see if he's still disillusioned by Avatar at Geneva..
