A taxi service company by the name of Taxi-E started the first electric taxi program in Amsterdam towards the end of 2011. The initial batch of vehicle consists of twelve Nissan Leafs. Some six months later, this fleet of twelve green warriors has clocked up around 250,000km.

As the service is greatly appreciated by the Dutch citizens, Taxi-E plans to expand the number of EVs in their fleet, although the actual figure is not specified. The company’s goal is to have 450 units of EVs in their lineup by 2015.

The initiative is targeted at reducing pollution in Amsterdam, thus providing the residents a cleaner and healthier living environment. The Dutch are embracing the green trend and this has resulted in a sharp rise in the sales of electric cars with the Nissan Leaf leading the way.

Other models include the Mitsubishi I-Miev, the Citroen C-Zero and the Peugeot Ion. The Netherlands is building a charging station network for the whole country. It will probably become the second country after Estonia to have such a network in an operational state.

Here in Singapore, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) co-lead a multi-agency EV Taskforce to test-bed EVs and assess the benefits and feasibility of adopting EVs in Singapore.

On 25 June 2011, the EV Test-bed was launched as an open platform for companies interested in shaping the future of electrification of the transport system.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
