In March this year, Peugeot showcased a concept version of the 208 GTI at the Geneva Motor Show. The car was heavily inspired by the legendary 205 GTi of the 1980s and early 1990s. After receiving some positive reactions towards it, Peugeot has decided to give the 208 GTi the go-ahead for production.

The production version of the car will be shown off at the Paris Motor Show this year in September. Power will come from Peugeot S.A.’s 1.6-litre inline-four engine that uses direct injection and a turbocharger. It’s a version of the engine used in the Citroen DS3 and Mini Cooper S.

The Peugeot 208 GTi is rumoured to be available in two power outputs; a 154bhp variant and a 204bhp version. The latter may be called the GTi Racing and the car’s 0-100km/h timing will come in under seven seconds. However, this version will not be a track-focused performance car.

“We have to find our own niche, and one in which we can expect to sell a significant number of cars,” commented Peugeot UK’s managing director, Tim Zimmerman. “We want more emphasis on everyday usability, where we think we’ll find a larger audience.”

The Peugeot 208 GTi will use a six-speed manual transmission but an automatic manual option is in the plans as well. The car will sit on lowered suspension, a larger front grille, unique front and rear bumpers, a twin exhaust and sporty seats.
