The GTI has all-but-faded from the lime light of the hot hatch world, being more of a warm hatch, in its standard form. For example, the Ford Focus ST, a front wheel drive performance hatch, delivers around 247bhp and 340Nm of torque. This could probably be a reason why the next GTI will be more powerful.
It is also rumoured that the next GTI will get the same 267bhp engine that is currently being featured in the Golf R and Scirocco R. If this rumour is true, it will put the Golf GTI in the forefront of front wheel drive performance hatchbacks.
And also, this could mean that either the Golf R will get more power and compete with the likes of the Ford Focus RS or it will disappear completely. And possibly it will be the latter. On top of this, the Golf GTD might get a power boost from the 170bhp as well.
It is good to hear that a car like the Golf GTI might get more power. The last two generations has stayed around the 200-ish mark. Hopefully, Volkswagen will keep the all wheel drive R model, probably give it more power and make it a little more exclusive.
