Fiat has unveiled the 2013 500 Turbo at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California. The new variant aims for the sweet spot between the relatively hardcore Abarth and the standard 500. The Fiat 500 turbo offers a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance brakes and a revised steering system for improved handling.

For a more aggressive appearance, the new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo features a pronounced front fascia that has been pushed 2.7 inches forward of the car’s signature "whiskers and logo" face to accommodate the new 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine. And speaking of the engine, it is essentially an Abarth powertrain without the overboost function.

The new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo features a single turbocharger, twin intercoolers and sport-tuned exhaust to deliver 135bhp and 203Nm of torque. This is 34 bhp and 70Nm more than the naturally-aspirated 1.4-litre Fiat 500. The engine is mated to a track-proven C510 five-speed manual transmission with a 3.35 final-drive gear ratio for quick acceleration and higher top speed. The turbocharged variant achieves a fuel efficiency figure of up to 6.9L/100km.

Interior updates for the Fiat 500 Turbo include a new gear knob, sport seats, and a revised steering wheel with silver stitching. Those who are particular about In-car entertainment can top up to get a Beats audio system that comes with six speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier.

The Fiat 500 Turbo will face competition from other subcompact offerings such as the Audi A1, Mini and VW Bettle. Perhaps, Fiat should develop an automatic version of the car to attract a wider mass of customer.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
