With the launch of the 2012 BMW 3 Series, BMW has further cemented its position as the leader of the compact luxury segment. However, that was before the Cadillac ATS sedan went on sale.

The Cadillac ATS was specifically designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series. In fact, this is Cadillacís first attempt to enter the segment dominated by the 3 Series. Motor Trend takes the two cars for a spin to find out if the ATS has got what it takes to dethrone the German sport sedan.

Both the cars in the group test have very similar specifications. Both are powered by a 2.0L turbocharged, direct-injected engine. In addition, both engines are connected to a 6-speed manual gearbox which transmits the power to the rear wheels.

The BMW 328i generates 240 bhp with a peak torque of 345 Nm while Cadillacís unit produces 272 bhp and 352Nm of torque. So, the American wins on paper qualifications. However, as we know, paper qualifications does not equate always equate with better job performance. The same applies to the automotive world.

Hence, can the Cadillac ATS succeed in accomplishing what the C-Class, A4 and S60 have failed? Read on to find out. I promise that this is one challenge that the 3 series would sweat over.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
