In its second iteration, the current Lexus IS sedan has been with us since 2005. It may have survived the 2007-2008 global financial crisis, but it may not survive the onslaught of fresher models such as the facelifted Audi A4, the naughty Volvo S60 and the 2012 BMW 3 Series.

Hope for the IS family line is here as the 2014 IS saloon has been spied in camouflage while undergoing some testing in Belgium. The overall profile of the car appears to be more streamlined and the sloping hood lends a sporty stance. The new sedan is said to adopt the LF-CC concept’s spindle grille treatment, which is the most aggressive design ever seen.

Lexus’ next compact luxury saloon is believed to be underpinned by a stretched version of Toyota’s rear-wheel drive platform that the Toyota 86 coupe and Subaru BRZ utilize. The Subaru BRZ is praised by Sgcarmart.com to have razor sharp steering and faultless body control. Therefore, we can perhaps look forward to a real driver’s car in the upcoming IS.

For the engine lineup, the current IS250’s 2.5L V6 unit is expected to be replaced by a brand new four-cylinder engine. The IS 350 should borrow the 3.5L V6 currently powering its bigger brother, the GS 350. A hybrid version will join the line up some time after its initial launch, which is expected to be around 6 months down the road.

The new IS will be the BMW 3 Series’ next challenger to fend off after the Cadillac ATS.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
