After releasing the Rapid sedan, Skoda is readying the next generation Octavia sedan. The current version has been in the market for eight years and the upcoming MK3 Octavia is said to be larger and positioned more upmarket.
The prototype of the new Octavia was spied for the first time during testing at the Nürburgring track in Germany. The general profile of the car looks rather similar to the Rapid and the lower front end makes the car appear sleeker than the existing model.
The new Octavia is the first Skoda to utilize Volkswagen’s new MQB modular platform after the Audi A3, Seat Leon and new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf. This means that the new Octavia will be lighter despite being longer than the outgoing model.
The car will be powered by the same diesel and petrol engines found on the aforementioned models which include the 1.4-litre TSI and 1.6-litre TDI units. The top-of-the-range vRS variant will be propelled by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an output of about 220bhp. It will be mated to either a DSG or six-speed manual transmission.
The all-new Octavia is expected to make its world premiere in 2013 at either the Geneva Motor Show in March or the Frankfurt Motor Show later in September.
