Don't get me wrong when I say the current Phantom is not my favourite luxury vehicle from Rolls-Royce. It is a fine luxury vehicle, a first class motoring experience. The designers and craftsman are sensitive to meticulous details and perfection is key. Sadly I don’t own one and neither have I had a chance to commute as a passenger.
But in a design perspective, I prefer Rolls-Royce from the golden era like the Phantom II, Silver Wraith, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow, and Silver Ghost. I'm not saying the Phantom is a badly designed car - its just lacks a certain something, a character that the old models had - for me at least.
Nonetheless, ever since BMW took over, there have only been two main model lines, the Phantom and Ghost, and one of it has been in production for 10 years. The Rolls-Royce Phantom is the uncontested king of luxury motoring. Yes Maybach had a shot and they are gone while Bentley is still playing catch up. A decade ago, Rolls-Royce moved to its new headquarters at Goodwood and delivered the first Phantom - one minute past midnight on January 1st, 2003.
From then till today, the British automaker have hand crafted over 5,000 units of the Phantom models in sedan, coupe, drophead coupes and extended-wheelbase configurations.
A revised model, the Phantom series 2 was introduced earlier this year and is expected to be on the roads till 2016, so for anyone interested you might want to start saving for the million dollar 'yacht on wheels .
