The ultra luxury watch company Blancpain (a part of the Swatch Group, Switzerland) is the series title sponsor for one of the world's fastest one make series, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo. 2009 was the first year that the race was run and this year, a lot of Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, lightweight versions of the Gallardo LP560-4 will compete at the opening race at the Hockenheimring in Germany on 24-25th April 2010 at the supporting race for the German Touring Car Championship or in short, the DTM. Motorsport fans would know that the DTM is a race series where you can find heavily modified Audis, BMWs, Mercedes' and so forth. To some, it is the pinnacle of touring car racing. Or in my opinion, a racing series whose cars still look like those we drive, albeit with wings, slats, large spoilers and more.
The LP560-4 based Super Trofeo has a reworked chassis and a power output of 570 hp. The V10 engine is a ‘Iniezione Diretta Stratificata’ engine or in English, Stratified Direct Injection Engine. It sounds so much better when you say it in Italian. To simplify matters it is a Lamborghini tuned V10 running the Volkswagen-Audi Group 'FSI' direct injection technology, as Lamborghini is a company within the VAG. The race car features Lamborghini’s permanent four-wheel drive, making the Super Trofeo the only one-make, all-wheel-drive motorsport series
Teams that have already confirmed for 2010 include Reiter Engineering, which secured second place in the 2009 Teams’ Championship, while new Swiss outfit Black Bull Racing (no relation to Red Bull Racing but more of a homage to the Lamborghini logo) will make its Super Trofeo debut in Hockenheim. 2009 Pro-Am Drivers’ Champion Claudio Rossetto will also compete, having secured seven race victories for team Petri Corse last year. There is a mix of last year's participants together with some first timers.
Last year, Blancpain President and CEO, Marc A. Hayek (son of Swatch Group -which Blancpain is a part of - Chairman, Nicholas Hayek) secured four race victories and finished second in the Pro-Am drivers’ classification. He will participate again this year.
Pirelli, who are the sole OEM supplier to Lamborghini is also a partner in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series.
This here is a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, a watch that is currently on my wish list (and will stay a wish for a long while).
