Geneva buses to get 15-Second 'Flash Chargers'

By Faiming_low on 21 Jul 2016 in New technology

Attached Image Geneva's public transport network will be going high-tech in the not too distant future as their Government has just awarded a $16 million contract to ABB to build a network of 'flash-charging' charging stations which will power buses along a new route in the city, running from the city's airport to a new suburb dubbed Praille-Acacias-Vernet.

When the stations are up and running, these electric buses that run along the 13-station route will automatically charge itself for just 15 seconds when the bus stops at these stations to pick up and drop off passengers. It is reported this short charge can provide the buses with enough power to reach the next charging station.

At the end of the route, the buses will only need five minutes to fully charge itself thanks to the 600kW chargers that are five times more powerful than Tesla's superchargers. In comparison, a Tesla Model S will need around 75 minutes to reach full charge.

The authorities claim that using this electric buses can cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1,000 tons per year compared to more traditional diesel buses.

Since young, Fai Ming has always centered his life around cars. In fact his first word was 'car' and not 'mum' or 'dad'. Aren't kids cute?

Technology is moving ahead fast. Not fully tested in real life yet. Just like Tesla autopilot.

Unlike the past innovation were thoroughly tested before they are brought to the market. Today this cycle is significantly shorten.

Eg Do we really need for a new model smartphone every year?

While technology is creeping it's way into almost everything into our lives, there is still lots to be desired.

Eg Most luxury cars today have the most sophisticated safety features. However many of these features are lacking in most modest or base model cars. If technology is to benefit everyone then it would be good if these innovations that protects road users and pedestrian should be found in all cars.

But until then we will continue to see accidents on our roads.

But eventually like the central locking and power windows, in time, these will find their way to hopefully all the production cars.
