Lets talk about Magneti Marelli for a moment. Magneti Marelli, is an Italian electronics company under Fiat that manufacturers OEM car parts like ECUs, meter clusters, headlights, ignition systems, sparkplugs and so on for the Fiat group and other car brands as well. Magneti Marelli was the company Ferrari went to get its hybrid KERS or kinetic energy recovery system system for the Ferrari 599 Hy-KERS concept car and had also collaborated with other large car manufacturers like Ford (together with Microsoft) for their Sync and Blue & Me in car computer system. The company is so big that they claim to have at least one part bearing their name or design in every car on the market.
Anyway, they've decided to become ever so slightly bigger. This time Magneti Marelli has decided to enter the tuning car market by launching their tuning division. Their first victim, er, model for Magneti Marelli Elaborazioni is the Alfa Romeo MiTo, and they call it the MiTo “Kit-One”.
The Kit-One is actually a showcase for all the tuning parts that can be fitted on the MiTo. You can buy them separately of course and it starts with a 31bhp upgrade ECU and exhaust system with bypass valve for the car. I suppose if you bought the 170bhp version you'd get 200bhp. Pretty decent for the little hatchback.
To stop those horses you can also opt for a Brembo brake kit carrying 305mm front discs. To make the car corner better you can opt for lowering (and stiffer) springs that chop 30mm off the ride height. To also corner better and to look good are 18in matte black rims. And to finish it off there is a very 'in-your-face' body kit complete with really exaggerated arches with screw holes to tell everyone that your MiTo is one mean machine, or that you have bad taste depending on which school of tuning you graduated from. I expect some MiTo enthusiasts in this region to use this body kit soon.
Magneti Marelli have shown us their first tuner car and they are currently developing packages for the Fiat Bravo and 500. As Fiat has an alliance with Chrysler, some may think that we'd also see Chryslers and Jeeps tuned by Magneti Marelli Elaborazioni. Anyway, this giant has decided to grow some more.
