Mercedes developing new Diesotto engine

Mercedes-Benz gave the confirmation that the project to develop its unique Diesotto engine has been given the go signal. There were reports that the project was put off because of the company’s decision to focus on other future propulsion technology, such as electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen....

At the Paris Motor Show, Professor Herbert Kohler, vice president of future mobility at Mercedes-Benz, revealed that in five years, the new powerplant would be ready for production. In an interview with What Car?, Kohler said that its plans may be ambitious but that the company is confident that it will be able to achieve its goal. He added that three of the five hurdles that Mercedes-Benz recognized have been conquered and revealed that the engine is on the test bench and in development cars. What makes the Diesotto engine so special is that it offers the refinement of a petrol engine with the economy, low CO2 emissions and torque of a diesel.

This engine runs on standard petrol and features spark plugs at the top of each cylinder. However, they don't fire on every cycle. If the driver accelerates hard, they’d fire. But in normally driving, the engine is dependent on the natural heat given off by compression to ignite the fuel mixture, similar to a diesel engine. Mercedes-Benz didn’t give a date of when the engine will be fitted on a production car but in 2008, it had said that the engine would be first used on the S Class..

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
