"Our production was running at high speed, especially in the second half," said Wolfgang Bernhard, head of Mercedes-Benz operations, in a statement. Mercedes has seen high demand for its E-Class and S-Class models this year. However, production figures does not necessary equate to sales figures. For example, during the economic downturn in 2009, Sales went down by 14 percent whereas production was reduced by a deeper 23 percent. Mercedes must have drawn down on its inventory level back then.
Nonetheless, 2010 has been a good year for Mercedes Benz. For the first 11 months of 2010, its sales figure was 1.06 million, although its arch rival, BMW, sold marginally more at 1.11 million units during the same period. The German automakers have benefited from the booming market in China and the healthy rebound in Europe and North America.
