Not too long ago, I bestowed upon Singapore the prestigious title of Motoring Hell. With traffic congestion, bad driving etiquette and now road rage becoming par for course these days, I am sure that many of you readers are inclined to agree with me. But here is something to make you feel better about your daily drive to work even if you encounter a kayu driver that nearly side-swiped you.

We should all be thankful that our daily commute to work does not take place on the Death Road in Bolivia.

I first came across the Death Road in a Bolivian special episode of popular motoring program Top Gear. The dizzying heights and narrow roads with traffic flowing in both directions looked terrifying on my television screen. Fellow viewers of the program will recall a particularly harrowing moment where Clarkson had to share an exceptionally narrow portion of the road with a vehicle coming the opposite way.

The reputation of the Death Road is well-deserved as it actually claims more than 200 lives yearly. But what is less apparent from the video or program is that this road is actually a trucking route that connects several major Bolivian cities. So it is an important road much like AYE is to Singapore and there are Bolivian drivers for whom the dangers of the road is a daily way of life as part of their journey to work.

For those who did not catch the program, here is a video showing the Death Road.

So still think your daily commute is all that bad?

I realised that this is pretty close to the one I experienced at Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Just that the road I was driving on was about 1.5 saloon cars' width. Not exactly as bad, but a good exposure for me.

  • Is 'tiny living' really irrelevant in Singapore?

I discussed the possibility of living in tiny houses in Singapore in an earlier blog post. But as we know, it isn't an option to begin with – no thanks, of course, to our lack of land space.  Someone also pointed out that the idea of tiny houses is "romanticised" – which, I don't deny (but hey, that's why it's a dream). While it's clear tiny houses aren't going to work out here, the concept of 'tiny living' is; not just physically but also mentally. Anyone who has lived enough years lo
