Ford's Ecoboost engine gets power boost

Just when you thought how Ford manage to squeeze 123bhp out of the tiny 3-cylinder 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine, Superchips, a British company specialising in electronic engine tuning, upped the ante.

Through an engine control unit (ECU) upgrade, the UK firm managed to boost the output of the engine to 145bhp at 6,169 rpm and 227Nm of torque at 2,656 rpm. This is done by rewriting the ignition, fuelling and boost control parameters of the Bosch MED17 engine management found in 1.0L turbocharged Focus.

The British tuning firm claims that the remap will not cause the fuel consumption figure to fall below that of the standard 123bhp Focus as long as the car is driven in a “like for like” manner. But then again, if one were to drive the tuned Focus like a standard Focus, what is the point of tuning the car?

The engine remap is said to deliver a ‘safe, reliable and consistent additional power’. Installing the chip is just a “plug-and-play” process and it is reversible. Superchip's ECU upgrade is priced at £455 (S$882) including VAT.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
