Honda has introduced plans which will bring changes to its vehicles. The Japanese auto company wishes to improve the fuel efficiency of its cars and the changes include the introduction of continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) into its future models and also the introduction of a new “Earth Dreams” engine family.

Continuously variable transmissions have always been a talking point among drivers. Its gearless mechanism is more efficient and lighter than traditional automatic transmissions. But many have mentioned that its drivetrain characteristics makes driving a little boring.

Although Honda has featured CVTs in several of its models, the upcoming 2013 Accord will feature a continuously variable transmission that the company claims to be more responsive and lively than any other CVTs in the market today. Sales for the Accord moves faster in some markets and this is probably why it was introduced in that model first.

As for the new engine family, it is expected that they will feature advanced direct fuel injection which is said to have a potential ten percent increase in fuel efficiency. A variant of this new engine (2.4-litre, four cylinder) will be featured in the upcoming 2013 Accord and a smaller displacement engine will be introduced in a revised Honda Civic in the near future.

Other than these two main changes, more Honda models will have their own hybrid option as Honda will introduce its large-car hybrid powertrain system next year. Although the company will put heavy emphasis on continuously variable transmissions, only mainstream models will feature them. Any future performance and off-road models will get traditionally geared transmissions.

Actually in racing scenario, CVT is actually the most ideal tranmission as the gear ratio will always be at it's optimum power delivery.

The only problem is, current CVT technology is very subjected to torque loss due to the torque convertor and The reliability and limit of the CVT is questionable.
