London launches “Off your engine” campaign

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has launched a new campaign encouraging Londoners to turn off their engines when their vehicle is stationary for more than a minute. Delivered by the Transport for London (TFL), the campaign urges drivers of all vehicles to switch off their engines when they are parked or when picking up and dropping off people or goods, reducing the amount of unnecessary and harmful exhaust fumes emitted.

A study conducted shows that by doing so, CO2 emissions would be reduced by 100 million kg each year. The campaign also highlights the health benefits of reducing pollution levels and that includes preventing and alleviating illnesses such as asthma and heart and lung conditions. In addition, a research revealed that poor air quality contributes to around 4,300 premature deaths in London in a year and affects the quality of life.

Some motorists may be concerned that re-starting the engine repeatedly within a short time frame may be detrimental to the vehicle’s battery. However, a test undertaken by the TFL shows the vehicles tested were able to withstand repeatedly being switched on and off over a hundred times in an hour with no loss of performance observed.

Mr Boris is well-aware that some people may not listen unless their wallets are hurt directly. Hence, he has allowed certain city boroughs to impose a fine of up to £80 (S$155) on drivers who let their vehicles idle for a long time.

On several occasions at Mount Faber Park, I have observed tour buses with engines on while waiting for their passengers. Perhaps, the Singapore Ministry for Environment and Water Resources may want to embark on a similar campaign by Mr Boris.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.

I fully support this too!

Especially diesel trucks when waiting.

The authorities in Singapore should enforce this strictly. There are so many inconsiderate taxi drivers, bikes and passenger cars which kept the engines on while waiting.
