I hope you are sitting tight now as the following news may make you fall off your chair. The new 2013 Ford Mondeo which measures over 4.8m will be offered with the 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecoboost power plant. The Blue Oval brand has confirmed the news ahead of its ‘Go Further’ event in Holland. The little engine is the winner of the ‘2012 International Engine of The year’ award.

"Today’s smartest technology offers customers more from less," said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Product Development of Ford of Europe. "This is as true of engines as it is of computers and smartphones, and by equipping the all-new Mondeo in Europe with our acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine we are delivering cutting-edge technology that delivers a very real and tangible customer benefit."

In this application, the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 123bhp with 170Nm of torque. In the Overboost mode, the torque figure increases to 200Nm. As the most fuel efficient variant in the Mondeo range, the large sedan emits less than 130g of CO2/km. This power plant will replace the outgoing Mondeo's naturally aspirated 1.6-litre inline-four that generates 118bhp.

Other than direct injection and turbocharging, other technological highlights of the engine includes twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), aluminium cylinder head, low friction piston coatings, piston rings and crank seals, as well as a timing drive belt bathed in oil. The engine is small enough to fit into an A4-sized paper. Perhaps the engine bay of the 1.0-litre Mondeo could have enough space for a small child to play hide-and-seek.

More details of the Ford Mondeo are due to be released the ‘Go Further’ event, alongside with the 2013 Ford Fiesta.

I have been a car fanatic since 1989, when my father was changing our family car then to a Toyota Corolla 1.6 GL fitted with a Twin Cam 16 valve engine that was carburetor-fed, a big deal back in those days. The automobile technology and industry fascinates me and I hope to broadcast these interesting developments to everyone out there through this blog.
