BMW is recalling some 7,600 2012 3 Series models for head restraints that could rise beyond the federal limit after tests conducted by BMW. The affected vehicles were built between 19 Oct 2011 to 18 Mar 2012, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the event of a crash, with a headrest is the full upright position, downward movement in excess of 25 millimeters may increase the risk of neck injury. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries relating to this defect have been documented so far.

BMW will inspect and repair these models as necessary, with no expense to the owners. The repair works involves fitting a clamp to the headrest post on both front seats to limit the amount of upward travel. However it is not clear if the local 3 series models will be affected.

The 2012 BMW 3 series was launched in Singapore recently.
