Euro 2016 Weekly Recap with Hyundai Motor - Week One
In this weekly recap of the UEFA Euro 2016 Tournament brought to you by Official Sponsor Hyundai Motor, we look back at the action that took place over the past week of footballing action.
The first match of the tournament was between hosts France and Romania, which proved to be a dramatic affair. France dominated posession in the first half, but struggled to create clear chances. The hosts eventually took the lead in the 57th minute through Olivier Giroud, but that lead did not last long, with Romania's Bogdan Stancu slotting home the penalty kick after Patrice Evra was judged to have brought down Nicolae Stanciu in the penalty box. The game seemed headed for a draw, but Dimitri Payet rifled home a sensational late goal in the 89th minute to secure three points for the host nation.
In the other Group A match, Switzerland beat Albernia 1-0. In Group B, Wales topped Slovakia 2-1, while England and Russia played out a 1-1 draw. England seemed bound for victory after a stunning free-kick from Eric Dier, but Russia found an equaliser deep into stoppage time.
However, the match in Marseille was marred with scenes of violence, as immediately after the whistle, Russian fans were seen rushing into the English fans. UEFA has announced that it will begin investigation proceedings into the violence between Russia and England fans.
In Group C, Germany beat Ukraine 2-0, while Poland emerged 1-0 victors over Northern Ireland. The first Group D match saw Croatia beat Turkey 1-0.
