blogentry-133713-0-65091400-1477740722_thumb.jpgNissan’s Mexican division is killing off one of the oldest cars in the market, the Tsuru, which is known to us as the Sunny from the early 90's. After being on market for more than 20 years, production will end soon as it is known to be one of the most unsafe cars on the road.

blogentry-133713-0-26078100-1477740725_thumb.jpgThe Tsuru was originally a called the Sentra, was sold since 1992 and did not receive any significant redesign till now. More than 1.8 million units were sold in Mexico since. Along the way, it gained a new Renault transmission, new electronic systems and various small cosmetic changes. It costs around S$10,400 in Mexico.

Adding salt to the wounds, it experienced the highest fatality score for crashes in which it was involved. According to NCAP, there were 2,011 crashes involving fatalities with this model resulting in 4,102 deaths from 2007 till 2012.

blogentry-133713-0-07305200-1477740738_thumb.jpg"It was only right of Nissan to withdraw from sale this sub-standard and unsafe model," said David Ward, secretary general of the British-based Global NCAP.

For the Nissan Sunny fans, there are currently 2 units on sale now if you are interested. This one looks exactly like it was back in 1992.

Well during the early 90s, airbags where not even invented and I bet this chassis don't even have the space to equipped them.

But to be fair 80% of the 90s cars will get 0 stars in today's NCAP tests.

I remember the Sunny to be at the mid-higher end of the B&B sedan segment, competing with the Corolla and Civic. The Sunny was known to be more refine and comfortable ride.

There's a 1.3 EX Saloon and a 1.6 16 Valve Super Saloon iirc.

It's amazing Nissan still makes them. I thought the longest chassis award would have been given to Proton for their Wira model which was on sale for 16 years.

What I can remember about this car....

1) the moniker "Super Saloon".

2) zero rear leg room.

The only Nissan I have driven is a 1.5L Pulsar hatchback when I was learning to drive and got my license.

The article is comparing a product launched in the early 90s. 25 years later, technology has advanced.

  • It's okay, you're just feeling ambivalent

I almost always struggle to describe my state of mind when asked to consider how I'm feeling. How do you express emotions that exist together but work in opposition to each other? When invited to join a gathering with friends, I delight over the prospect of catching up but also yearn to be lounging at home. I'm inspired by an accomplished co-worker yet envy her. I feel happy about a new beginning but nervous and, at the same time, sad over the closing of a chapter.  It's complicated. A
