https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhSh_LEHvpoI'm pretty sure you've all seen your fair share of hydraulic press videos, crushing a bowling ball, baseball, metal, glass, plastic and many other crush-able stuff. But ever wondered what would happen when you attempt to crush a car coil spring? Want to know how to tell how good your coil springs are?

The only machine that can answer that question without boring us with engineering diagrams or physics equations is the hydraulic press. So how far can the atom smasher compress the spring of a modern Toyota Corolla?

Given what springs like to do when pushed to their limit, the precautions during this test were very prudent; we can certainly picture this experiment ending badly for unprotected bystanders or the camera. Needless to say, the amount of travel applied to the spring greatly exceeded what the Corolla's springs are allowed to do.

  • Is 'tiny living' really irrelevant in Singapore?

I discussed the possibility of living in tiny houses in Singapore in an earlier blog post. But as we know, it isn't an option to begin with – no thanks, of course, to our lack of land space.  Someone also pointed out that the idea of tiny houses is "romanticised" – which, I don't deny (but hey, that's why it's a dream). While it's clear tiny houses aren't going to work out here, the concept of 'tiny living' is; not just physically but also mentally. Anyone who has lived enough years lo
