Volvo predicts diesel engines to die off after 2020
Just as NEA recently introduced the Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) which is likely to wipe out diesels here once it comes into effect next year, Volvo's Chief Executive Håkan Samuelsson was quoted saying that diesel engines will die off after 2020 as emissions standards become stricter worldwide.
He revealed this to Autocar at the Geneva Motor Show reasoning that making a diesel engine with same NOx as a petrol engine will be more expensive, and will be a negative thing in the long term.
In the short term, diesel engines will still play an important part in meeting CO2 fleet requirements but beyond that, it is highly unlikely as the company favors hybrids and electric cars.
It plans to get its first its first all electric car to the market by 2019 and hopes that by 2025, it will have an electric version of all of its models.
