Scotland's local publication has reported that nearly three-quarters of its diesel cars in Scotland could be stopped from entering its cities.

According to The Scotsman, the first minister Nicola Sturgeon has plans to only allow Euro 6 diesels and Euro 3 petrol-powered vehicles to enter into the city centers across the country. It is estimated that 738,000 diesel cars and 244,000 petrol cars in Scotland would be affected. They could still enter if they pay a penalty of up to 20 pounds (S$35) a day.

Cities to be enforced with the diesel ban will start in Glasgow first with similar zones in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee to be established in due time.

The ban is a very tough one for car owners as well as the government as an estimated two-thirds of all taxis in Glasgow and Edinburgh have engines that don’t comply, pressuring the government to provide grants for cleaner engines to be retrofitted.
