Scion Turbocharged August 28, 2014 Share August 28, 2014 heard something funny on radio this morning... the DJs were talking about our Mandarin (Singlish) vs PRC and Taiwan (their so-called standardized ones) for example, for us 水草 refers to straw 巴刹 refers to market 龙沟 refers to drain these local terms are often influenced by Malay and Hokkien what other local terms you can think of that are not "standardized"? (anyway i think these terms represent our culture, there's no need to follow PRC or Taiwan in their standardization) the DJ mentioned another one: 冲凉水 refers to body foam... but i have never heard of this term before, maybe it's more popularly used in Malaysia? ↡ Advertisement 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Eg. 一粒球， 一粒苹果， 一粒榴莲 粒 只用在 米粒般大小的东西。 Eg, 一粒米 We can be proud of the way we speak our Chinese even though it's not the same as that in ROC, PRC. Unless artistic articulations are involved / needed (eg performances on stage), if the language used provides clear communications of ideas / emotions between the parties, maybe some flexibility is necessary when both sides are ok to use local vocab. There're bread n butter cars, also 'bread n butter' languages?! The problem is that some local terms are wrong, e.g. zhi3 dai4 for plastic bag, ba1 xian1 for percent, etc. When a friend of mine visited Singapore from China, sometimes he had to rely on me to translate even though the other party was supposed to be speaking Mandarin! The other issue is the lack of vocabulary. For example, there is only one word to describe something that is beautiful, wonderful, splendid, etc, and that is "mei3"!
