Picnic06-Biante15 Supersonic July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 (edited) Singapore to bid for Olympic with Malaysia ? CNA : Singapore-Malaysia joint bid for Olympic Games an 'interesting concept': SNOC SINGAPORE: The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) said on Tuesday (Jul 28) that jointly bidding to host the Olympic Games with Malaysia is an “interesting concept which has yet to be explored in depth”. In response to media queries, SNOC said while Singapore have hosted the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and the Southeast Asian Games, it is unable to host the Olympic Games due to the demands and magnitude of the requirements. “We have to tread carefully as hosting the Olympic Games is a massive undertaking which will need the full support of the Government,” SNOC said. This comes after Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) President Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar said having two countries co-host the Olympics is a possibility under the International Olympics Committee (IOC)’s new agenda, in a report in Malaysian newspaper The Star on Monday. “Doing it all on our own may be beyond us but under the new Olympic reform agenda, the IOC allow twin bids. I do see a joint bid between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in the future,” Tunku Imran said in The Star. In a separate The Malay Mail report, IOC President Thomas Bach said there is no barrier for any country to host the Olympic Games. “I hope that one day we can have it here...because Olympics Agenda 2020 offers an opportunity to have an Olympic Games (to be held) in a country, which until now, has not considered (the possibility) to host Olympic Games,” Mr Bach told The Malay Mail, in response to the possibility of having the Olympic Games in Southeast Asia. - CNA/dl link : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/sport/singapore-malaysia-joint/2012676.html YOG over budget by 300%, this one .... Benarsenal Turbocharged July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 (edited) April Fool's Day? Wait long long ah. Firstly Olympic Games is a very expensive loss-making exercise (look at Athens, Beijing, Sochi, and even upcoming Tokyo 2020. All lost money). That will not go down well here. And between the incompetent inefficiency of Malaysia, and Singapore's indifferent attitude towards sports (how many people really cared about SEA Games or YOG? Let's be serious here), why would IOC want to give us Olympics? No way man. Edited July 28, 2015 by Benarsenal

F355 Turbocharged July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 This is not like World Cup football where Japan / Korea can co host like in 2002 . Olympic Games are awarded to cities , not countries .That's why Los Angeles can host in 1984 and then Atlanta in 1996 ( both cities in USA ) . So, this partnership will not happen. Camrysfa Turbocharged July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 From Olympic host country in 2004 to financial crisis in 10 years ......Greece (2012 article ) http://www.bloomberg.com/bw/articles/2012-08-02/how-the-2004-olympics-triggered-greeces-decline As they watch the London Olympics, many Greeks may wonder how their country went from the international glory of the Athens Games in 2004 to the recriminations of today’s crisis. Hosting the event cost almost €9 billion ($11 billion at today’s exchange rate), making the 2004 Games the most expensive ever at that point. Greek taxpayers were on the hook for €7 billion, which did not include the cost of extra projects such as a new airport and metro system. Within days of the closing ceremony, Greece warned the euro area that its public debt and deficit figures would be worse than expected. The 2004 deficit came in at 6.1 percent of gross domestic product, more than double the euro-zone limit, while debt reached 110.6 percent of gross domestic product, the highest in the European Union. (Today, Greece’s debt is 165.3 percent of GDP.) Greece became the first EU country to be placed under fiscal monitoring by the European Commission, in 2005. With public debt totaling €168 billion in 2004, it’s clear that the Olympics alone did not bring about an economic collapse. Yet the Athens Games epitomized the structural problems that bedeviled the country for decades. It’s not just a question of how much money was spent on the Olympics, it’s also how it was spent and where it came from. After a period of austerity to tighten up its finances and qualify for euro entry in 2001, the Greek government loosened the purse strings once it entered the single currency. The games were just one of several areas where public spending was unchecked and funded by unsustainable borrowing. ↡ Advertisement
